My mom can hold her urine for approx 2 or 3 hours depending on how much liquid she has had. What are some pull up and diapering methods that active families use when they take their incontinent moms out? My mom doesn't feel herself having to pee while she is sitting and will wet herself. But when she gets up, she can feel herself pee. The goal is to have a schedule but that is not perfect yet or even close, so I more or less judge by her liquid intake which sometimes results in dry pads and sometimes they are wet and I have to change them. I use Tena pull ups and then I layer them with two hour glass pads on top of the pull up. But I leave the strip of paper that covers the sticky tape so it does not ruin the diaper below. But sometimes the pee rolls out the sides and her pants get wet. 90% of the time we are good. SO I should not complain. I am just wondering what else could be out there as far as other methods? I just bought a box of diaper doubler lining for babies hoping it might make a regular pull up more absorbent for night time since my mom does not hold it during the night or wakes up anymore to pee.

Truth, those absorbent beads hold A LOT of pee before there is an overflow, often it is the rate of absorption that is the bigger problem so a good fit is important. I think you should familiarize yourself with how they will work by having her wear them at home during the day for a while.

Cwillie, If i just use a diaper without lining it with another pad inside, won't the pull up neeed to be removed and tossed with just one pee? I think it will swell and the weight of the body will just squish the pee out the sides won;t it?

So if we don't get to the restroom in time and we skip a bathroom break and my mom pees in the pad, will a second pee two hours later leak out or will the pee spread to the forward and back part of the pad which is dry and still has space or will it run off the sides because the center of the pad is already filled with pee?
I always take my mom to the rest room after being out two hours even if she signals that she is peeing in her pad on the way to the rest room. I have her try and get more pee out and i change the pad anyway even if it only has the center wet with pee and there is 75% more space for pee. ( i also have a pull up which the pad is resting over) But i would like to skip the bathroom brake lately since we aren't making it on time anymore because of mobility and cognition issues. If the pad can hold two pees and push our outing for 4 hours, that would make things a little easier. If the pad can fill up and NOT leak out and NOT cause skin irritation, i would like to have that option for some days. They seem really absorbent and i use coconut oil spray on my moms privates so she is never irritated.

I get it, the products are expensive and it seems a shame to dispose of one that is barely used, early on I even tried to reuse ones that had be worn for a day but not used, and I would only glove one hand to save on those too lol.
The pullups can hold an astonishing amount of liquid, but I'm not sure it would be very comfortable to keep wearing one that was more than a little wet. Other than doctor's appointments it may be that you need to plan shorter outings. And be thankful she can still hold her bowels.

Thanks... I make psssshhhhh pssssshhhhhh pssssshhhhh sounds when i am in the toilet with my mom and i also have to get her to squat a bit forward to tilt her bladder as it is dropped a bit. BUt if there is one pee that saturated the center area of a pad or a pull up, will the next pee run out regardless if there is a pad or a pull up? There is so much space left on the rest of the pull up which the urine does not reach. I always changed the pad as i was good with every 2 -3 hours to take her to a bathroom. Lately she resists moving or getting up so i can't get her to the bathroom every 2-3 hours. So i am in that transition and trying to learn what is best.

I would also like to encourage the wearing of black slacks to prevent embarrassment.

If you want to encourage someone to pee while on the toilet, run tap water from the faucett into the sink so they hear the sound of water running. If you want to elicit the response desired covertly, pretend to be washing your hands.

Cwillie that was amazing What an excellent idea when using a public restroom.
you get three gold stars today.

I would say to truth told master that art and take Mom to a rest room every few hours and prepare to change the diaper if she is wet. Naturally put her on the potty at the same time.

The problem with using a pad inside of a pull up is exactly what you have encountered, once the pad is full there is nowhere for the excess to go except off the sides and down the legs, which is also why the advice to double diaper or use pads as boosters doesn't work. For overnight there are more absorbent products available, although I did make use of a few extra packages of overnight pads by cutting a slit the waterproof backing and using them as boosters.

I know it is simpler to change a pad than a pull up, but I think you need to forget about the pads and rely on the pullup alone. Someone on the forum once posted a method to change a pullup without getting undressed....
First, most pullups can be removed easily by tearing the side seams. Now, with pants around the ankles place the new pullup by her feet, pull the side of the pullup down through the leg of the pants and over the foot and back up the leg, one leg done. Now repeat with the other leg. I had to sit down and practice this on myself until the light bulb went off, but OMG once I had it mastered it was nothing short of miraculous.
