I have been caring for my father in law since Dec 2013 when he had brain surgery, I have never been paid for this. In Oct 2017 he had a severe stroke and I was advised to apply for Medicaid to help with the cost of co-pays and supplies, and be paid as caregiver. Senior services says unless he is oriented to date and time he can't hire me to care for him. He hasn't known date and time since 2013, We live in Missouri, anyone know of resources to help?

If your state will pay for in home services, take it. A lot of states do not even have this an an option for families.

You can then get a perhaps part time job and build up your work history and FICA for your own future retirement.

They will pay a stranger to come into my home and care for him, but won't pay me unless he is completely alert and able to hire me.

Different states have different agencies and different rules for being paid as a caregiver. In my state, if you want to be paid for caregiving for a family member, you’re pretty much out of luck. I did research online about this since I am my husband’s caregiver. The only suggestion I got is a reverse mortgage on our home. My state has no funding set aside for paying caregivers. You could try calling your local Medicare office or Agency on Aging, but don’t get your hopes up.
