My mom falls a lot with walker so I got her a wheel chair and she is falling out of the chair. How can I keep her from falling out of her wheel chair?

My mother has fallen out of her wheelchair at the nursing home quite a few times. We are lucky she hasn't had serious injuries. I spoke with the Administrator at the nursing home. She said Geri Chairs are considered restraints, seat belts are considered restraints, etc.
The new law gives the elderly the right to fall. This new information has been eye opening for me. My mother has fallen out of bed too and they will no longer use bed rails because they are also considered restraints.

The aunt that has lived with me for several years who is now bedridden with Parkinson’s. Used a wheelchair for the last four years previous to January. We tried everything and finally settled on having a seatbelt installed that she could fasten herself in and out, so she could continue to do her own transfer to the toilet and bed. She continued to use her Parkinson’s walker  when she felt strong and the wheelchair when she didn’t.

There are walkers made especially for Parkinson's patients. It's balanced in such a way it keeps them forward. I was told they tend to fall backwards. See if there is a cushion with a slant towards the back. Makes it harder to get out. I hope you get her out of the wheelchair a lot. They r so uncomfortable, for my Mom anyway. They have no lower back support where Mom needed it. The NH put her in a Geri chair. She could wheel all over but not get out because the seat slanted so made it hard. Also was padded even around the head. If she snoozed, her head was supported and the chair reclined.

We used a gel foam cushion that had a rubberized cover & didn't slide out of the wheelchair seat while dad was sitting in it. We also had a cloth like belt that we could tie (around his stomach or chest area to the back of the wheelchair) to help my dad sit up and not slide out of his chair. Of course he needed to be checked often, to be sure the belt is not too tight or they've become too uncomfortable sitting in the wheelchair. Hope that helps!

I agree with the evaluation for the type of chair in the mean time can you recline the back a bit so it is more difficult for her to lean forward and fall out? Along with that if you can get a chair alarm it will alert you if she does make movement to get out of the chair.

I wonder if she needs a geri chair? I agree with BarbB that she needs a PT evaluation, and I would go through the doctor who treats her Parkinson's (if that is not her PCP).

Please have mom's doctor order a physical therapy evaluation to assess her wheelchair use. They should be able to offer suggestions as to cushions, etc.
