Mom's urogynecologist prescribed an antibiotic for her continuous UTI. It is Sulfamethoxazole-TMP. She was given it for five days, twice a day, but last night she became dilirious and fell twice. It was her third day. Today, she started hullucinating. Was seeing people and creatures. Talking to dead people. Her doctor agreed with me to stop the medicine immediately. Has anyone else had a problem with this medicine too? She has not slept in two days and can't seem to.

This sounds more like the UTI itself than a reaction to the sulfa drug, but it is, in any case a good reason for a trip to the ER, as this could be anything. You need to find out if a culture is in (takes three days minimal) and whether this is even the right drug for your Mom, because the UTI could be raging if it is not.

"Smethoxazole/trimethoprim is an effective combination antibiotic; however, it may not be suitable for those with kidney or liver disease or folate deficiency. The risk of side effects may be higher in the elderly.Mar 31, 2023

"Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim can cause your blood potassium level to rise and your blood sodium level to drop, especially with higher doses. Get medical help right away if you experience weakness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, headache, or memory problems."

Better to try and prevent a UTI instead of having to constantly be using antibiotics that eventually don't work. My Mom was on cranberry tablets (juice does not work) and a probiotic the last year of her life and never had another UTI. A member Alva, retired RN, recommends D-Mannose. This prevents the UTI. Mom needs to drink plenty of water. No soap used near the urethra. Clean well after using the bathroom. I use Huggies, big and thicker then those women wipes. If she is still using regular panties, switch to white cotton. If incontinent, make sure she is changed right away. She could also be allergic to the incontinent product. I could not use Kotex products.

Google the name of the drug. Mayco clinic site says it can mess of electrolytes badly (high potassium and low sodium,).

I would get her to the ER for evaluation.

What are the side effects of sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim?
This medicine may cause electrolyte problems, including high potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia) and low sodium in the blood (hyponatremia). Call the doctor for guidance right away, and if they aren't available go to urgent care or the ER. Even if these symptoms aren't being caused by the medication something has changed and she needs to be evaluate.
