My aunt is at the Henry Mayo Hospital in Santa Clarita. Her dementia is at an all time high and liver is failing. Kidneys next. The path is to be sent home on hospic and I’m concerned. Her home is infested with bed bugs. What can we do? It’s unhealthy for her to go back there.

Find Care & Housing
Meet with the hospital social worker as soon as possible. Insist firmly the home is an unsafe environment without proper caregivers and this would be an unsafe discharge. Understand that home hospice doesn’t provide hands on caregiving, that part is on the family. Aunt needs either an inpatient hospice house or a nursing home

The hospital and the Social Worker from the Hospice can look for a facility that has a bed.
To discharge her to home would be unsafe until her home is cleared of bedbugs. And after that if she does not have 24/7 care it would still be unsafe for her to return home.
The person that is POA for her health and finances should be stepping up and either getting the house habitable or if your Aunt is not returning home getting it ready to sell.

Tell them it's an unsafe discharge, and that there is no one that can care for her at home.

Do not allow them to discharge your aunt to anywhere but a nursing home.

Who is going to care for her at home ?
Hospice only sends a nurse once a week and an aide a few days a week for a few hours . Even if they sent an aide 5 days a week it’s not overnight .
Your aunt can’t be alone . She needs 24/7 care .

Why not look for a hospice facility ( although those are rare ) or have her go to SNF nursing home ?
