How do I Scam Thee, Let me Count The Ways...

Now some experts say do not answer an unknown caller. In 3 seconds, the scammer has collected information about you.. your voice, "Hello" can be copied and used to scam you. And if you talk a bit more, you're giving them more ammunition without knowing.. they listen and record you snd your surrounding noises...whatever bit of info, is enough for somebody to get paid in exchange for 3 seconds. The news today said someone was arrested for collecting illegal signatures to "help get a bill on the voting ballot for people to vote on it. This man had stolen ID's and paid some homeless people to forge a signature. The more signatures he gets, the more money he makes. According to the news, he made $41,000.00 ! When I see these signature collectors, I wonder if this is really real? Or, will they be using your signature and ID for illegal purposes.. (?) I don't know...

The wall street Journal has another article today. A lot of scam calls and texts targeting seniors are coming from inmates in the US with illicit phones. They have really effective scripts that they use and they have American accents.

Be ever vigilant.

Burnt and Geaton,

The woman was in her 60's. The $200 million was what she received in her divorce. Her husband had started a home insurance company. My state is a 50-50 state for divorces. I was amazed that there was that much profit in marketing home insurance.

She turned over the $200 million to someone who was known locally as a reputable broker.

Sadly she had never worked outside of the home and I don't think was street smart. She had a high school degree and had married her high school sweetheart. I think he managed all finances during their marriage.

I'm not sure what the family was donating locally.

@brandee

I saw your comment about the woman who was scammed out of the $200 million. I'm just a little bit pleased when someone with that much gets taken for it. Instead of doing some good for people in need with that money, she's so greedy it gets invested to make more.

I live in Florida and we have a friend who owns a cattle ranch that abuts The Villages, a large retirement community. He banks with a national branch that has 3 branches in The Villages. He said bank staff told him they see 7-10 incidents of financial scams every week. The bank staff do all they can do to prevent the scam transfers of cash but the clients still insist on transferring the monies to scammers.

One lady owned a paid for stand alone house in The Villages. She transferred so much money to scammers that she lost her house and had to move back to family in upstate NY.

The Wall Street Journal had an article yesterday about a legal secretary who was scammed out of $7 million in crypto. Her crypto has been located oversees but not sure if she will ever get it back.

So many scams out there......

We have a local lady. She had $200 million from a divorce settlement. She gave the money to a broker and said she wanted it conservatively invested.
The local broker ponzied her money to prop up a failing shopping center development. All of her money was lost. The broker also had her children take out mortgages on their paid for houses and ponzied their money also. She has a lawsuit against the brokerage. The broker committed suicide.
