Rehab discharged Dad. He is eating but they basically threw him out for nit doing PT. They also did NOT get him his MRI and EMG prescribed over six weeks ago. They basically gave me paperwork and sent him home. I had service set up bed and commode. Yet he was to weak to get from ambulance up stairs. It took four of us.
I do not want to see him deteriate and am wondering which may be better assisted living or nursing home. He barely moves and I am wondering can I pay for PT and OT in a nursing home? I was told a private PT can go to assisted living. Yet I am wondering if no PT in nursing home am I condemning him to expire?

Your mistake was bringing him home instead of moving him to long term care. Didn't the Discharge Coordinator talk to you? or the Social Worker?
He will not get more PT or OT, because it won't do any good for him. Those things are ordered by an MD, you can't just call a PT without the Rx.
He cannot go to Assisted Living either, they have to be able to get to the dining hall and not poop their pants.
I hope you at least have a visiting nurse checking on him, and you can tell her the details of how he is progressing or regressing.

I want you to think about your question. If dad was not doing pt in rehab, why do you think he's going to do it elsewhere? Is he not doing it because he's not strong enough or because of loss of cognitive capacity or because he's stubborn? Please ask the doctor to order a visiting nurse and PT to evaluate his overall condition and make recommendations for further care. Has hospice been mentioned as an option ?

GBenjamin, you've been posting about your dad and his hip replacement for over a month, but I don't believe you answered the question about what the neurological evaluation showed. Does the neurologist suspect dementia, and is that the reason for the MRI?

I'm curious also about the discharge process from rehab. I know you didn't like or trust them, but they must have met with you. What did they tell you?

Sorry to read that your Dad isn't getting with the program. Some elders will dig in their heels when it comes to physical therapy, they are mad at themselves for even being in this position so they are pouting.

My Dad disliked physical therapy until one day a very tall blonde became his physical therapist... finally Dad took interest in the program.

Did your Dad have a case worker at the hospital? If so, check with that person to see what is the next step.

As to which type of continuing care your Dad would need, sounds more like a nursing home would be recommended than assistant living.

I was told nursing homes will not give any PT or OT after Medicare.

Dad is home but need to place in a NH. He is very stubborn and not eating as much. Yet will drink ensure like crazy. His rehab center made many mistakes including sending him home without a doctors release. In fact doctor called me and was not informed he was released. What I thought woukd be good care ended up being bad.

Not sure if PT will or will not work. Discharge packet included two prescriptions for MRI and EMG. Both dated December 16 and never done. In fact I signed off on them the day of family meeting. Three days before release. Let me say I will be filing a complaint with the proper authorities,
Vans came yesterday but with snow nobody came or called today. I need a NH since I am not sure full time nurse is suitable.
