Today we are going home from the Hospital to Hospice care at home. After listening to three of his doctors who strongly recommended hospice and agreed with them now I am wondering if I did the right thing. My husband had a stroke and infective endocarditis. Don't know really which one came first. Anyway the antibiotic given for these two things affected his kidneys to the point he needed internal vein catheter for dialysis. At this point is when doctors strongly suggested the hospice care. Am I doing the right thing?

Nancy--

I am so sorry to hear of this. What a tough decision to make.

Bear in mind that 3 doctors have weighed in on this. Your husband is very sick and going to get sicker. Would he want the "heroic" type of care that could keep him alive and in pain for an extra few months, or weeks?

Hospice care is sweet and humane. Let the hospice workers talk to you and you talk to them with all your concerns and worries. They will guide you through.

Now is the time to get kids (if any) on board with the care, if you and hubby want/need them. My mother could not handle the emotional strain, so we kids were often called upon to give daddy morphine and valium. I gave him as much as he wanted. He passed in NO PAIN, finally, after 15 years of active suffering.

It's not my place to say if you are making the right decision. You'll know in your heart.

God bless you through this time. I hope you have peace.

Midkid said it wonderfully. After 3 Dr.s we too brought my MIL home to our farm and hospice. It's a little hard on the family but peace and blessings for the patient. After all...there is no place like home. And he has his honey with him. Peace.
