My dad was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago with dementia. My mother is his caregiver and she needs a break. She wants to take him to a daycare but knows he won't want to go. We are trying to find reasons to get him there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Find Care & Housing
My grandmother who has dementia has been attending a day center for about a year now. She loves it. I don't call it a daycare, we call it The Center. She is picked up and dropped off by a local bus service and she loves the bus ride. It's one of her favourite things to do. Our center here has 2 days a week that are dedicated specifically to people who have dementia/Alzheimer/brain injuries, my Grandma attends on those days. When I first brought up the subject, I basically told her she would be going to spend the day with friends her own age, that she would have lunch there and that she would get to do activities, sing, etc. She really enjoys going. I would suggest calling the daycare you are thinking of having your dad go to and find out about taking him there for a visit, they will usually be okay with having you or your mom, go with him, spend some time there so he can see how things are and how well he will do there. It's definitely an adjustment for him, but people at these places are usually really great and will do all they can to help your dad feel comfortable.
