Good day all. Has anyone on here taken a loved one to the E.R and asked for a social admit? If so, how did it go for you and your loved one? Did they admit them and get them into a nursing home? Thank you in advance. I will be doing this and am nervous I won't get the help I need for my father who can no longer be at home as he has become dangerous.

No, hospitals don't do "social admits".
What happens often with desperate caregivers is that after trying everything else they end with what is called "The ER Dump". Meaning essentially that they have the elder driven to the ER with some excuse or another that is medical in nature (oft times the elder has become violent). While there they request a social worker at once. They tell the Social Worker that the elder cannot return to their home because they themselves are now mentally and physically unfit to care for them.
This puts the social worker to work on placement.
Do know that once you accept an elder into your home it has become THEIR home, and it is very difficult to get them out of said home; that holds in most states whether the elder is paying any rental or not.

The easiest way to get help is if the LO is in the hospital for a medical reason and has made the 3 or 4 days where Medicare will pay for Rehab. You allow the person to be placed in Rehab. Once there you ask for a 24/7 evaluation. If its found the person is now 24/7 care, you tell the Social Worker that the person cannot return to their home if thats where they reside, your home if thats where they reside, because you can not care for them. It would be an "unsafe discharge" Tell them after Rehab, they need to be transferred to Long term care.

How you handle it after that is up to you. You can be involved in getting them placed and Medicaid set up if they cannot afford to pay. Or, walk away and allow the State to become their guardian. If you do the latter, you will have no say in where they are placed or in their care.

I called 911 because I was afraid of the way my LO was behaving. They examined him and found no reason he needed to be there medically, but realized he would be at risk if he were sent back home. Therefore they did hold him and found a NH. The staff at my local hospital was wonderful. I think it is better if you send your LO by ambulance, with some (even if it is perceived) reason. Perhaps he/she is wandering, or maybe after a fall to take xrays. Once there, you need to refuse to take him/her back and tell the case manager at the hospital it is not safe at home anymore.

I'm not happy you had to go through this but I am happy you can tell me what you did! Thank you! I feel so anxious and it's kind souls like you that share your experiences that help someone like me. Thank you! I'm taking him because I live in a small town with no resources so I'm going to the city near me. It won't be a fun ride but I am praying the doctor and nurses have kindness. I'm doing this because I love him. I know you understand.
