He was in memory care because I was unable to care for him at home due to paranoia episodes as he was becoming very agitated.
After 8 days they were unable to handle him, took too much time to monitor him. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital to try to find meds that would make him manageable. When he was in the psychiatric hospital they would not allow me to see him. The last time I saw him was when he was being transferred from Memory care to a hospital, he was heavily sedated , did not know what was going on. He was in hospital for 7 days in ICU, with Covid, bacterial pneumonia and sepsis, intubated the entire time, he was never awake. Then he died.
My reason for posting this is, he would have died no matter what.
Don't put your loved one in a place where they won't let you be with them.
If I could do it over, I would try to keep him in the hospital where I could be with him. The psychiatric hospital was the wrong place to put him. They called me on the 23rd to tell me he was having trouble breathing, a very sad way for the end of his life. He died on the 29th. The only positive note in this is he was never in any pain at all. I never got to say I love you and goodbye.

I am so sorry. You would have had so much peace in your heart had you been able to be with him. I do know that you were at the end of your rope to have to place him; no one does this lightly. To my mind, Carole, he was suffering. I hope there is some peace for you in knowing he never has to feel alone or scared again, never confused, and you never have to stand witness, helpless in his suffering. Thank you for letting us know.

Please take comfort in knowing that you were with him in spirit, caring about him, and would have been there physically if allowed. I think wherever his mind was, he had you were there with him. Take care and try not to go over and over how it ended, rather concentrate on all the time you had with him. I'm so sorry for your loss.
