Hi, Mom is approaching her 90th birthday, suffered a broken hip ten days ago, had surgery to repair hip (screws inserted). Was a successful procedure. Mom was vibrant, forgetful at times, short term memory loss. Took antibiotic meds in hospital and was transferred to a rehab facility 3 days after surgery. She has basically done very very little in ways of rehab. Has stopped eating and spits out her meds and the limited food that she consumes. Is constantly falling asleep and appears to have lost all desires to get better. At a crossroads as to how to handle her and her care. just sleeping all the time. Need some advice on how to handle her and provide care? When asked about contacting relatives to come in to say there goodbyes, she adamantly said NO. Now what? Please HELP

In addition to the excellent advise from Daughter1930, please sit down with the facility and get a list of every single med/dosage that is being given to mom.

Every time my mom went from hospital to rehab, her meds got screwed up. Either they were giving her twice as much of something and none at all of something else.

Make sure that her sleepiness isn't med related.

I agree with Barb. Because of pain from a back injury my Mom had, they increased her blood pressure meds. Problem was they never decreased them once the pain was gone. She couldn't sit up. The homecare nurse caught the problem and called the PCP who lowered her dosage. Same thing happened to my DH.

Breaking a hip is often a game changer in the elderly. Have you consulted her doctor about the change in mental status, the refusing to participate in therapy, not taking meds, and sleepiness? If not, this needs to happen. Your mom has been through a lot for a person her age, she’s exhausted. Time and encouragement may help. Or she may not ever come back to the level where she was. But a consultation with her doctor about the current situation is a good place to start

I'm always astonished when I read what seems to be expected of people in post injury/surgery rehab, especially people who are as old as your mom. I get that we can't let them lay around in bed gut gosh, just getting up and moving on a regular day can be very difficult for the very elderly. I would ask about adding nutritional supplements to keep up her strength - hopefully she just needs more time to recover.

If she doesn't respond to rehab, they will discharge her. Medicare will not pay. But I also agree with Barb about her meds.
